I do NOT have a buddy. What should I do?

Please be patient with us as it may take some time to find a perfect buddy for you. We are only a small group of volunteers and sadly, we do not have the capacity to give all of you a personalized buddy. This does not mean that we will not help you if you have any problems though. We will give you as much information as possible by email and try to have someone at dormitories to help you out. If you have any problems, just email us or write to us on our social media and we will help you to the best of our abilities!

What is the WiFi password?

All of you will receive a personal login to the system. We buddies do not have this. Either contact your coordinator directly, wait until registration or go to centrum sluzeb (in building A, on the ground floor opposite the library https://en.mapy.cz/s/34sKx ), which can help you as well. Until you receive the login, you can connect to the internet by cable. (You will have to bring or buy your own cable)

Can I buy only part of the welcome pack?

Yes, you can. Just tell the buddy in the office which part you would like and we will fix it for you and change the price accordingly.

What is in the welcome pack?

It differs slightly each term, but usually, there is a Czech SIM (from Vodafone with 3gb of data and free SMS), a ticket to the welcome party, ESN card (membership and discount card), vouchers, promo material, and some other small things. We always send an email about the exact contents. This same info can also be found here: https://www.buddyhk.cz/en/content/welcome-pack

Where can I do laundry in Palachova?

The laundrette is located in the E building. Take your ISIC and 40 CZK to reception and say you want to do laundry. You have to bring your own washing liquid/powder.

You will get the keys for 2 hours. The set of 3 keys in for the doors there: The main door of the E building, then down in the cellar on the left you have door two, walk till the end and on the left you have door 3. There are 4 washing machines in this room and they are all numbered. The number on the loose key has to correspond to the machine. Behind the machine there is a big red turning button. Put the key in there and then you can turn the button to turn on the electricity to the machine. The rest of the instructions are on the machine itself.

There are also 3 dryers in the room and, again, the keys can be borrowed for a fee at the reception.

There is also a drying room to which you can borrow the keys for free. The dormitory is not responsible for any lost items of clothing.

In the first week or two of the semester, it is usually not possible to use the laundry room as they try to decrease the lines at reception. More information found at the reception

Where is the ESN office?

The ESN office is in building J (FIM). https://en.mapy.cz/s/34fd7

You can get there by walk or bus (From Palachova, take bus 23 or 24 to Heyrovského and from there you can see the main university buildings.). FIM is the middle building of the 3. Go in through its main entrance, pass reception and it is the first door on the left. The door has our logo on it.

When is the ESN office open?

We will post opening times in our facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/2819478034757840/

My SIM is not working. What should I do?

Did you read the instructions first? Did you try turning it off and on again?

If the problem prevails, please email our IT guy at IT@buddyhk.cz

I cannot register my ESN card on ESNcard.org (needed for Ryanair discount). What should I do?

Please take your ESN card with you to the buddy office, where a buddy will help you further. Ee will give you a new card for free and help you with the registration on the spot.

Can I pay in euro/dollar/anything other than CZK?

No. In the Czech Republic we use CZK, but you can use any of the exchange offices to change your foreign currency to Czech crowns. The closest one from dormitories is in Futurum: https://en.mapy.cz/s/34sjJ (The first shop on the left-hand side).

In some bigger shops you may pay with euro, but then there will be big visible signs saying so.

How much money will I need?

Accommodation costs about 3000 CZK per month + a 2000 CZK reservation fee. (This reservation fee you get back in the end if you leave the apartment like you found it- cleaned and in a liveable state.)

For food, an average Czech person pays maybe 3000-4000 CZK, but it is different for everyone.

Travel and drinking are up to you.

I am not in HK yet, but I want to go on a trip/event. What should I do?

Please fill in the registration form as usual and ask a friend or make a deal with another student to pay for you now and you can pay them back later. There is NO possibility to pay by bank transferal or similar.

Can I pay for someone else?

Yes. With the ESN card as an exception (as it is personalized with a picture), you can pay any of our fees for other students- Survival weekend, trips, events with reservation fees and the welcome pack without ESN card.

What papers do I need for a bank account?

Please read the following information: https://www.buddyhk.cz/en/content/bank-account

What is an ESN card?

Please read the following information: https://www.buddyhk.cz/en/content/esncard

Are an ISIC and ESN card the same thing?

No they are not.

The ESN card is a discount and membership card, meaning you can take part in anything we organize.

The ISIC is an international student card and you will need it to do laundry, borrow books in the library and our trip fees assume you have one. Without an ISIC you may have to pay more.

Where can I get a bus card/city card?

In the info-centrum in town. Go to the left help desk and they will help you. Usually, there is someone that speaks English: https://en.mapy.cz/s/34rLJ

Read more about the bus card here: https://www.buddyhk.cz/en/content/bus-card

I am bored...

Outside of all the events and trips that we plan for you, you can do many other fun things here. A small selection can be found here: https://www.buddyhk.cz/en/content/free-time

There are also a lot of beautiful places to travel to: Prague, Brno, Plzen, Karlový Vary, Ceský Krumlov, and Olomouc are all cities that are commonly visited by students. Closer by, you can find Kuks hospital, Pardubice and Kutná Hora. For hiking, we can recommend Adrspach, Bohemian Switzerland and Bohemian Paradise. With your ISIC, you receive a 75% discount on the CD trains (Ceske Drahy).
